How much light do houseplants need?

Light is the one input a houseplant cannot get more of by itself, which is why it matters more than watering routine or feeding schedule. Most houseplants are wrong for their spot, not wrong for the home.

Most common houseplants want bright, indirect light: close enough to a window to feel genuinely bright, but out of the direct sun that hits the glass. A minority tolerate low light and a minority want several hours of direct sun. Matching the plant to the room it is actually in matters more than any single rule, and the fastest way to do that is to read the room first.

How do you tell how much light a room actually gets?

Use the shadow test: the sharper the shadow, the stronger the light. In the middle of the day, hold your hand about 30cm above a plain sheet of white paper at the exact spot the plant sits, and look at the shadow it casts.

Check at midday on a clear day for the truest read, and check again in the afternoon: a spot that is bright at noon can sit in shade by 3pm, especially near a wall or another building. If you want a precise number rather than a read, a cheap lux-meter phone app gets close enough for houseplant purposes; a real light meter is a step up but not necessary for most homes.

Which way should a window face for bright light?

It depends which hemisphere you are in, and this is where a lot of care advice quietly gets it backwards for half the world. North of the equator, a south-facing window gets the strongest and longest light through the day, and a north-facing window gets the least. South of the equator, including Australia, it is the reverse: a north-facing window is the brightest spot in the house, and a south-facing window is the coolest and dimmest. East-facing windows catch gentler morning sun and west-facing windows catch stronger afternoon sun, in either hemisphere.

If in doubt, use the shadow test above rather than trusting a compass direction alone: it reads the light in your actual room, on your actual day, regardless of hemisphere.

What happens if a houseplant does not get enough light?

Too little light shows up as reaching, thinning growth rather than sudden damage, because the plant is not being harmed so much as starved of the energy to grow properly.

What happens if a houseplant gets too much direct light?

Too much direct sun scorches a plant rather than starving it, and the damage is faster and more visible than under-lighting.

Move a scorching plant back from the glass or behind a sheer curtain rather than away from the window altogether, since most sun-damaged plants still want bright light, just not direct contact with the beam. Give it a few weeks: sun damage does not reverse on the affected leaf, but new growth in the better spot comes in undamaged. Do grow lights help, and how do you use them?

A grow light genuinely substitutes for a weak window, and is worth adding to a low-light room rather than accepting stunted growth. Full-spectrum LED grow lights are the current standard: position one 15 to 30cm above the foliage and run it for 10 to 14 hours a day, since duration matters as much as intensity. A grow light cannot fully replace strong direct sun for a succulent or a fruiting plant, but it comfortably covers the low-to-medium range most foliage houseplants need.

Does a houseplant's light need change with the seasons?

Yes, because the sun sits lower and the days are shorter in winter, so the same window delivers noticeably less light than it does in summer. A spot that was bright indirect in January can read as only medium light by June (or the reverse, six months apart, south of the equator). Re-run the shadow test each season rather than assuming a spot stays the same, and expect most plants to grow more slowly through the darker months regardless of what you do.
