Poinsettia care: the complete guide

Guidance verified against Oklahoma State University Extension, Penn State Extension, Kansas State Research and Extension and the ASPCA on 29 September 2026. Figures were taken from search summaries of those pages, dated the same day. Sources linked below.

Poinsettia wants bright, indirect light for at least 6 hours a day, water only when the top of the soil has dried, and nights no colder than about 55°F (13°C). It is a perennial shrub that reblooms only after about 8 to 11 weeks of 14-hour nights starting around 1 October, and it is only mildly irritating to cats and dogs, not the deadly plant of holiday myth.

AttributeWhat a poinsettia needs
LightAt least 6 hours of bright, indirect daylight; direct sun fades the bract colour
WaterThoroughly, when the top of the soil is dry; never left standing in water
Temperature65 to 70°F (18 to 21°C) by day, 55 to 65°F (13 to 18°C) at night; drops below about 55°F trigger leaf drop
Soil / potWell-draining potting mix in a pot with drainage holes
FertiliserNone over the holidays; a complete houseplant fertiliser through summer once new growth starts
Rebloom trigger14 hours of complete darkness nightly from about 1 October, for 8 to 11 weeks
ToxicityMildly irritating to cats and dogs (ASPCA); over-rated, usually self-limiting

What are the red parts of a poinsettia?

The red parts of a poinsettia are bracts, modified leaves, not petals. The real flowers are the tiny yellow clusters (cyathia) in the centre of each bract rosette. This matters for care: bract colour lasts for weeks because it is leaf tissue, and it forms only under long nights, which is why the rebloom routine below is about darkness rather than feeding.

How much light does a poinsettia need?

Give it bright, indirect daylight for at least 6 hours a day. A south, east or west-facing window suits it, set back from the glass, because direct sun can fade the bract colour. Less than 6 hours of good light is one of the leading causes of leaf drop. The general light guide covers reading a room's light level.

How often should you water a poinsettia?

Water thoroughly when the top of the soil feels dry, then let the excess drain away. Per Penn State Extension and the Oklahoma State fact sheet, watering while the mix is still wet suffocates the roots, causing wilting, yellowing and leaf drop, often from root rot. Remove or pierce the decorative foil sleeve so water cannot pool at the base. The general watering guide covers the finger test.

What temperature does a poinsettia need?

A poinsettia does best at 65 to 70°F (18 to 21°C) by day and 55 to 65°F (13 to 18°C) at night. Temperatures of 70°F or a little below keep bract colour longest. Rapid swings, cold drafts and heating vents are the hazard: a plant that drops below about 55°F (12°C) sheds leaves and bracts. The shop-to-home trip in winter is the classic trigger, so carry it wrapped. The temperature guide lists the range for other plants.

What soil, pot and fertiliser does a poinsettia need?

Use a well-draining potting mix in a pot with drainage holes, and do not fertilise while it is in colour or dropping leaves. Fertilising is unnecessary over the holidays and stresses compromised roots. Start feeding when new green growth appears in spring, then apply a complete houseplant fertiliser through summer at the rate on the label, per the Oklahoma State fact sheet. The soil and pot guide and fertilising guide cover mixes and dilution.

Why is my poinsettia dropping leaves?

SymptomLikely causeFix
Leaves and bracts drop after bringing it homeCold exposure below about 55°F, or abrupt change of environmentKeep it in a steady, warm spot; wrap it when carrying
Drop near a vent or doorDraft or heating ventMove it away from both
Yellow leaves, wilting, soil stays wetOverwatering or root rotLet the top of the soil dry; make sure water drains
Crisp, wilted leaves, dry mixUnderwateringWater thoroughly, then keep the schedule steady
Slow, steady drop, pale growthUnder 6 hours of bright lightMove to a brighter window

Avoid pruning or fertilising while leaves are actively dropping; leaves support root health and fertiliser stresses weak roots.

How do you make a poinsettia turn red again?

From about 1 October, give it 14 hours of complete darkness every night and 6 to 10 hours of bright light by day, with nights of 60 to 65°F. Bracts take roughly 8 to 11 weeks to colour, so starting in late September or early October gives colour by Christmas. Cover the plant with a box or move it to a closet with no light leak each evening, then back to a bright window each morning. Any stray light at night, from a lamp, streetlight or television, can delay flowering. Once the bracts start to colour, usually around Thanksgiving, the daily moving can stop. This is the same long-night logic as the Christmas cactus bloom trigger, though a poinsettia needs longer nights and no cold snap.

How do you care for a poinsettia after the holidays?

Keep it in bright light, water when the top of the soil is dry, and start fertilising once new growth appears. A poinsettia is a perennial shrub that lives for years. Per the Oklahoma State fact sheet, long shoots that develop between mid-July and mid-August are pinched back to make the plant bushy, with the last pinch around 15 to 25 August. Pruning stops by mid-August because the plant moves into bract-producing mode as the nights lengthen. Bring outdoor plants back inside by late September, then start the darkness routine above.

Are poinsettias poisonous to cats and dogs?

Only mildly. The ASPCA calls poinsettia toxicity over-rated, describing mild to moderate irritation of the mouth and stomach. Eating the plant can cause drooling, vomiting and rarely diarrhoea. The milky sap can also irritate skin, causing redness, swelling and itching, and rarely mildly irritates eyes. Signs are usually self-limiting and rarely need treatment. Unlike the non-toxic plants on the pet-safe plants list, a poinsettia is not on the safe table, because it does cause irritation. Contact a vet or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center on (888) 426-4435 if a large amount was eaten or signs persist.

FAQ

How often should you water a poinsettia?
Thoroughly, when the top of the soil feels dry. Never leave it standing in water.
Why is my poinsettia dropping leaves?
Cold or drafts below about 55°F, inconsistent watering, under 6 hours of bright light, or the move from shop to home.
Are poinsettias poisonous to cats and dogs?
Only mildly. The ASPCA calls the risk over-rated; expect drooling or vomiting at worst, and skin irritation from the sap.
How do you make a poinsettia turn red again?
From about 1 October, 14 hours of complete darkness nightly and 6 to 10 hours of bright light by day, for 8 to 11 weeks.
Can you keep a poinsettia after Christmas?
Yes. It is a perennial. Feed once new growth appears, pinch back until mid-August, and restart the darkness routine in early autumn.
